Live Theatre

Here's a short list of companies to follow and places to see them, mostly but not only in NYC.

Red Bull Theater
A great, young company directed by Jesse Berger that focuses on non-Shakespearean 17th-century works.  Highlights include a brilliant version of Middleton's The Revenger's Tragedy, to which I took students in 2006, a fantastic version of Women beware Women in 2008, and assorted other less well-known gems.  The mostly place in St. Clement's, a small theater space on W. 46th St in Manhattan.
BAM: The Brooklyn Academy of Music
Probably the best place in town to see traveling companies from the UK and beyond, I've seen many great shows here, including both Ian McKellan and Derek Jacobi as King Lear.

  • Cheek by Jowl: This smart, experimental UK company will bring John Ford's 'Tis Pity She's a Whore to New York in March 2012.
  • Propeller: I've not liked the most recent productions, but Edward Hall's UK-based all-male troupe is still one of my favorites.  Their Winter's Tale in 2005 was heart-breakingly good.
  • The Bridge Project: This Anglo-American group has been working for almost 4 years together, both at BAM and the Old Vic in London, and their project comes to an end in 2012 with Kevin Spacey in the title role of Richard III.  I'm going on Jan 31.

Theatre for a New Audience
A great local company, with discounts for theater-goers under 25.  They have a Shrew up in March 2012, and I think are building a dedicated theater-space near BAM.
Classic Stage Company
Another excellent company, based downtown near NYU.

ShakespeareNYC
Another local company, directed by Beverly Bullock, slowly working its way through the Complete Works.

Not to forget, our own Tara Bradway's Adirondack Shakespeare Company, who have been performing at St. John's since 2011 and also have a great summer season up north.
